A Mother’s Day Tribute

Categories: Blog, Home

On Mother’s Day, we celebrate those dedicated to the most important work—the steadfast pursuit of caring, loving, and guiding a child, regardless of age, to a better and brighter future.

Homes For Our Troops has a family of such mothers. Mothers like April Montera, whose son, Christopher, was severely injured in Afghanistan in 2012.

Army Sergeant First Class Christopher Montera was serving with the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division in Afghanistan when an explosion from a mortar round resulted in the bilateral above-the-knee amputation of his legs. Stateside, Christopher underwent extensive surgery and physical therapy at multiple hospitals before returning home.

April remembers the challenges they faced in a house no longer safe or accessible for Christopher.

“When our son came home after eight months in the hospital, we modified our family home of 41 years so that he could feel comfortable surrounded by family. We installed a chair lift so he could get upstairs, widened the doorway to his bedroom, and built a roll-in shower. But, as a mom, I knew he needed a place he could call his own. I’m forever grateful to HFOT. A specially adapted custom home has been a godsend. I will never forget the foundation HFOT provided—Home For Our Troops was a lifesaver for our family,” says April.

Homes For Our Troops would like to thank you, our valued donors and supporters, for providing the life-changing foundation for a better and brighter future for our nation’s injured Veterans. We also extend our gratitude to all the mothers who work tirelessly to provide a safe and secure home for their families.

Happy Mother’s Day from Homes For Our Troops.
