Turning Gratitude Into Action This Military Appreciation Month

Categories: Blog, Home

Each May, during National Military Appreciation Month, we’re reminded of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the brave men and women who have served our country. It’s a time for reflection and appreciation, but it can also be a meaningful opportunity to turn that gratitude into action.

At Homes For Our Troops, that action takes the form of building specially adapted custom homes for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. HFOT homes are built with over 40 major adaptations that make daily life more accessible. From wider doorways to roll-in showers and lowered countertops, every detail is designed so Veterans can move freely and safely within their own homes.

These homes allow Veterans to focus on recovery, return to school, grow their careers, and spend meaningful time with their families. Each home provides a foundation for rebuilding life after service.

Right now, 76 HFOT home-build projects are underway nationwide. At the same time, nearly 1,800 severely injured post-9/11 Veterans are still in need of adapted housing—a reminder that while progress is happening, there’s still more to be done.

Military Appreciation Month can look different for everyone. For some, it’s taking a quiet moment to reflect. For others, it’s finding a way to give back, whether that’s making a gift in honor or in memory of a Veteran, sharing a story, or simply learning more about the challenges Veterans face after service.

We invite you to explore the different ways you can support Veterans through HFOT. Every action, big or small, helps move us closer to a future where every eligible Veteran has a home of their own.
