Honoring All Who Served this Veterans Day

One hundred years ago today, President Woodrow Wilson issued a message commemorating the first Armistice Day, November 11, 1919.  The date initially recognized the anniversary of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the guns finally fell silent to end the “War to End All Wars”.  In 1938, Congress designated November 11th as a legal holiday known as Armistice Day.  Unfortunately, the Great War was followed by WWII and the Korean War, and thus Congress changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954, an observance honoring those who have served in the Armed Forces.

Over the last century, millions of brave women and men have defended and served our great Nation, protecting our freedoms throughout many conflicts and wars. Today’s Veterans represent eras from World War II and Korea, to Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, as well as numerous other conflicts. These great Americans vary in age and experience, yet have one thing in common: they selflessly joined the military to fight for their country, asking for nothing in return. They, however, deserve everything. Many Servicemembers have sacrificed their lives, health, and precious time with their families in their service to their Country. At Homes For Our Troops, we believe restoring independence to severely injured post-9/11 Veterans with specially adapted custom homes is the least we can do for all they have sacrificed.

I thank YOU, as a supporter of our critical mission, for doing your part as an upstanding American who recognizes the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. In our 15 years of operation, Homes For Our Troops has built and donated over 285 specially adapted custom homes to deserving Veterans. This milestone would not have been possible without you.

Please take some time today to thank the Veterans in your lives. Their patriotism and valor are the reason we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. To those who have served and those currently serving, I salute YOU for your service and sacrifice.

Happy Veterans Day.

Sincerely,

Bill Ivey
Executive Director
Homes For Our Troops
