Army SPC Alex Leonard
Everett, WA
Alex Leonard joined the Army after high school in 2001 to travel and experience new cultures.
On September 25, 2003, Specialist Leonard was serving as a forward observer assigned to the HHB, Division Artillery (DIVARTY), 101st Airborne Division in Iraq, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). His injuries resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee and right leg above the knee, partial hearing loss, arm injuries, and tinnitus.
He was transported to Landstuhl, Germany, before returning stateside to Walter Reed Medical Center, where he spent over a year undergoing more than 60 surgeries.
Medically retired, Alex enjoys woodworking and drone photography, and looks forward to cooking in an accessible kitchen. His current non-adapted home is not wheelchair accessible, making it difficult for him to rest and recover when not wearing his prosthetic limb.
Receiving a specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops will allow Alex to access every part of the home in his wheelchair. He looks forward to the single-level, open floor plan and accessible shower. “Every apartment and house I’ve lived in since being injured has had a bathroom that required me to transition from a wheelchair to the floor to the shower/tub. The shower and therapy tub in my HFOT home would make things immensely safer and easier,” he says.
Originally from Montana, Alex is choosing to build his home in Washington State to be close to family and friends.
Alex would like to express his gratitude to those who give back to Service Members injured in combat. “To the donors and supporters, thank you for your contributions so that HFOT can continue to help Veterans, like myself, find some peace.”
