81st D-Day Anniversary: A Reflection on Omaha Beach

Categories: Blog, Home

Eighty-one years ago on the night of June 5th, American paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, joined by British paratroopers of the 6th Airborne Division, conducted a night parachute and glider assault behind the landing beaches in Normandy, France. Hindered by bad weather and German anti-aircraft fire, many of the units were scattered far from their intended drop zones. Despite these challenges, these Soldiers formed into small groups and began attacking German positions wherever they could find them. Although not as synchronized as the planners envisioned, these brave men disrupted the German reaction to the invasion that followed a few hours after this airborne combat had started on the continent. Their initiative, teamwork, and perseverance greatly assisted and set the conditions for the success of the landings in the early morning of June 6.

Today the grandchildren and great grandchildren of these heroes continue to demonstrate that same initiative, teamwork, and perseverance as they deploy to protect our country from those who would do us harm. Unfortunately, many have suffered grievous wounds and injuries that have robbed them of their freedom and independence. That is where YOUR efforts come in. Because of you, Homes For Our Troops is able to donate specially adapted custom homes to these brave men and women, providing them a fully accessible foundation on which to rebuild their lives. On June 6 of this year, Homes For Our Troops will donate its 411th specially adapted home to a severely injured Army Veteran.

We could not do it without your support. You provide the resources that enable us to build and donate these life changing homes. On behalf of our Veterans, THANK YOU for your continued efforts in support of these great Americans. You are helping to repay a debt we owe them for their service and sacrifice.
