SSG Brian Schar

Elizabeth, CO

Mission Accomplished on Dec. 15, 2012

On Sept.19, 2007, Army Staff Sergeant Brian Schar was on his third deployment when he lost both of his legs above the knees and sustained nerve damage to his left arm when an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) hit his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq.

He was medically evacuated to the Green Zone before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he spent more than two and a half years at Walter Reed Medical Center undergoing multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation.

Brian and his wife, Michelle, are parents to Johnny and Blake. They are happy to be living in Colorado and moving forward with their future in a specially adapted custom HFOT home that provides a secure and stable environment where they can raise their two sons.

Brian would like to thank everyone who supported him through his transition back to civilian life. He is especially grateful to HFOT donors and supporters who helped make his new barrier-free home a reality.
