SSG Shane Savage
Ramona, OK
Inspired to serve his country, Shane Savage joined the Marines in 2001. After two combat deployments, he enlisted in the Army.
On September 3, 2010, on his fifth combat deployment, SSG Savage was serving as a Combat Engineer with the 584th Mobility Augmentation Company, 20th Engineer Battalion in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in severe injuries to his left leg and back, neurological tremors, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
He was airlifted to Kandahar Hospital for initial treatment before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany for additional surgery. Stateside, he underwent four years of limb salvage surgery at multiple hospitals before his left leg was amputated below the knee.
Shane and his wife, Melanie, are proud parents to Jada, Braxton, Van and Ryland. They enjoy hiking and camping as a family. Shane is the Tulsa Warriors Sled Hockey Team Captain and owner of Savage Smoked Snacks, a home business offering smoked snacks and bread.
In his current home, simple tasks like turning around in his wheelchair are challenging due to limited space. An HFOT home with an open floor plan and wide doorways and hallways will allow Shane to move safely and easily access every room. He eagerly anticipates using his wheelchair comfortably throughout the house, providing him with more quality time for his family and other activities.
Originally from Oklahoma, Shane is choosing to remain in his home state.
Shane would like to express his gratitude to HFOT donors and supporters. “Knowing we have an opportunity, to receive an accessible home that I can get around in without worry or fear of falling or injuring myself is a huge weight off our shoulders.”
