SSG Erik Mossberg

Rochester, MN

Inspired by his grandfather’s military service, Erik Mossberg enlisted in the Army in 2008.

On October 1, 2011, Staff Sergeant Mossberg was serving as an Infantryman with Bravo Company, 1-194th Combined Arms Battalion, 34th Infantry Division in Kalsu, Iraq, when he suffered a fall from an armored military vehicle, resulting in severe injuries to his left leg.

Erik received medical treatment for his injuries while deployed and completed his tour of duty. Over the following nine years, his injuries resulted in the development of more than 27 deep vein thrombosis (DVT) blood clots and required multiple surgical interventions. In 2020, six months after his medical retirement from the Army, Erik underwent a below-the-knee amputation of his left leg due to the injuries sustained in Iraq.

Erik and his wife, Za-Neta, are proud parents to Vivianna, Ragnar, and Odin. Erik’s greatest passion is serving others through faith and community. Sports and adaptive athletics also play a significant role in his life. He is actively involved in wheelchair softball, wheelchair basketball, and USA Sitting Volleyball. He also enjoys woodworking and spending time outdoors with his children.

A specially adapted custom HFOT home will allow Erik to move throughout the entire house and yard safely and independently. “Receiving an adapted home would empower me to rebuild my life with independence and stability. By removing daily barriers of mobility, I could focus on my long-term goals—continuing my education and training to serve others as a chaplain, pursuing ministry opportunities, and staying active in community service,” says Erik.

Originally from Minnesota, Erik is choosing to remain in his home state.

Erik would like to extend his deepest thanks to HFOT donors and supporters. “Your generosity does more than build houses; it restores independence, dignity, and hope for Veterans like me who have sacrificed so much.”
