SSG MIKE MINARD

Union Beach, NJ

Mission Accomplished on Dec. 21, 2009

Mike Minard joined the military to serve the United States of America, the country he loves so much.

On Oct. 1, 2007, Army Staff Sergeant Minard was severely injured on his third tour in Iraq. He was conducting a recon as an Infantryman with the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, north of Sadr City in Baghdad when a roadside bomb hit them. SSG Minard lost both legs in the blast.

After being evacuated to the United States, Mike underwent numerous surgeries and rehabilitation. He stayed in a hotel near the hospital with his family until Homes For Our Troops completed his specially adapted custom home in Union Beach, N.J. Mike says the accessibility of the home makes it easier for him to accomplish daily tasks like cooking and cleaning. He now has two daughters who keep him busy most of the time. Empowered by the freedom of an HFOT home, Mike has been able to advance his education. He has an associate’s degree in business administration from Brookdale Community College and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s in the same field at Rutgers University. Mike’s wife has been able to advance her education and career since they’ve moved into the home as well. She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from New Jersey City University. When Mike isn’t focusing on his academics, he finds time to give back to his community. He volunteers with the Association of the United States Army and is a member of multiple Veteran organizations. He also enjoys surfing, fishing, martial arts, archery, and exercising.

Mike appreciates HFOT donors and supporters for providing him with the gift of an adapted home. “You have made a significant impact on my family and me with the generosity provided. It is deeply appreciated and has done so much to improve the stability of life after being severely injured,” he says.
