SFC Daniel Metzdorf

Honea Path, SC

Inspired by his family’s military background, Daniel Metzdorf always knew he wanted to join the service. In 1996, after finishing high school, he enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman.

On January 27, 2004, Sergeant First Class Metzdorf, on his second combat tour, was conducting a night patrol with the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq when a roadside bomb detonated, killing three Soldiers, and injuring three others, including Daniel. He sustained severe injuries resulting in the loss of his right leg above the knee.

Daniel was airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany then transported to Walter Reed Medical Center where he underwent more than 27 surgeries. On Veteran’s Day in 2004, Daniel re-enlisted to stay with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of the Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, becoming the first above-the-knee amputee to pass the training course.

Daniel and his wife, Kristen, live full-time in their recreational vehicle, a lifestyle they enjoy, yet one that comes with many obstacles. With a small shower and steps into the vehicle, Daniel must always wear his prosthetic, making it difficult for him to rest and recover. He often worries about falling when transitioning through narrow spaces and doorways.

A specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops will give Daniel the ability to navigate the entire home using crutches or a wheelchair. He’s looking forward to the financial freedom of the mortgage-free home, which will allow the couple to pursue their dream of starting a farm and becoming part of the local homesteading community.

Daniel is choosing to build his home in South Carolina, a state that he and Kristen fell in love with during their travels together.

Daniel would like to extend his warmest thanks to HFOT donors and supporters. “To the cheerful givers of HFOT, we have seen the lives that have been changed through your generosity. We are honored to receive this gift.”
