SSG Ryan McIntosh

Ryan McIntosh joined the Army in 2010, inspired by his brother’s military service.

On December 8, 2010, Staff Sergeant McIntosh was serving as an Infantryman with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 4th Infantry Division in Afghanistan when he stepped on a pressure plate landmine, resulting in the traumatic amputation of his right leg below the knee.

He was medically evacuated to Kandahar Airfield for immediate treatment and then transferred to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he underwent additional surgery and rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Ryan and his wife, Hannah, are parents to Kaden and Grace. Ryan’s primary interests revolve around his family, especially supporting his children in their sports. He also enjoys working with his hands, particularly woodworking and metalworking.

In his current home, Ryan experiences daily physical strain while managing the demands of working a full-time job and caring for his family. Showering can be challenging while wearing or removing his prosthetic as he faces the risk of slipping.

A specially adapted custom HFOT home with a single-level, barrier-free environment would reduce the physical demands of moving throughout the home and allow Ryan to complete daily tasks more safely and independently. The roll-in accessible shower would make showering easier and safer. “A home designed for my needs would reduce the daily physical strain I experience as an amputee, allowing me to conserve energy and better manage the demands of working a full-time job,” Ryan says.

Originally from Colorado, Ryan is choosing to build his home in Utah, where he currently resides.

Ryan is deeply grateful to the HFOT donors and supporters for helping ease the physical burdens he experiences and giving him more time with the people he loves. “Thank you for the possibility of lifting a burden from my life and giving me something incredibly valuable: time. Time with my family, time with my children, and the ability to be more present with the people I love,” he says.
