SGT Bejamin Livsey
Westcliffe, CO
Benjamin Livsey’s early exposure to his grandfather’s accounts of military service shaped his decision to enlist. In 2007, he joined the Army.
On March 14, 2009, Sergeant Livsey was serving with 2nd Platoon, Alpha Company, 46th Engineer Battalion in Iraq when he was exposed to mortar attacks, resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that went undetected for the remainder of his deployment.
Stateside, while undergoing a medical review at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ben was diagnosed with neurological issues, including essential tremors, nerve damage, memory loss, loss of sight in his right eye, and bilateral peripheral vision loss.
Ben and his wife, Kathleen, are the parents of Stephanie, Vincent, and Benjamin. Ben enjoys recumbent cycling and swimming. He plans to participate in a paratriathlon in the future.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home will provide Ben and his family with a safe, accessible, and comfortable living environment. “It would be an incredible relief to have a home where my family and I can live safely,” Ben shares. He looks forward to a kitchen with adapted features that will enable his family to cook, dine, and spend time together with greater ease and independence.
Originally from Oklahoma, Ben is choosing to build in Colorado for the higher elevation, which alleviates headaches caused by his TBI.
Ben would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for the gift of a forever home. “I’m overwhelmed by your generosity. To have a home specially adapted to give me and my family a better life — I can’t express my sincere gratitude enough. It’s a dream come true.”
