How to take part in the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

Categories: Blog, Helping in the Community, Home, Veteran topic

In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Americans held candlelight vigils, charity events, and donated blood to support victims and their families. To keep this unity and Patriotism going strong, 9/11 family members and support groups established September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance in 2002. On this day, Americans volunteer in their local communities in tribute to the lives lost during the September 11 attacks, and the men and women who joined the military in response.

Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is honoring The National Day of Service and Remembrance this year by conducting Army Sergeant LisaMarie Wiley’s Volunteer Day on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, in Garden Ridge, Texas. SGT Wiley lost her left leg after stepping on a daisy-chained improvised explosive device (IED) while serving in Afghanistan.

We at Homes For Our Troops believe in keeping this Patriotic spirit alive. Here are some ways you can support injured Veterans on the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and every day:

Volunteer

If you cannot support the Wiley Volunteer Day, volunteer to support a Veteran cause on September 11, and look for opportunities to support HFOT, some of which follow.

Attend a build event

You can support the building of an HFOT home for an injured Veteran in your area by welcoming the Veteran to the community and attending a build event. We have over 80 active projects nationwide; find out if there’s one near you.

Start a fundraiser

Hosting a fundraiser is a fun way to raise awareness about a cause you care deeply about. Our fundraising team will be happy to assist you in getting an HFOT benefit off the ground. If interested, please contact Fundraising Coordinator Victoria Weston at vweston@hfotusa.org.

Sign-up for a race

Running is not only beneficial for your health, it is also a great way to raise funds and awareness for a worthy cause. Make every mile count by joining Team HFOT. Check out our upcoming races here. Already signed up for one? You can also run for Team HFOT as a Do It Yourself (DIY) runner; find out more by contacting Events Coordinator Krista Landry at klandry@hfotusa.org.

Make a tribute gift

Making a contribution in honor or in memory of a loved one is a meaningful gift. Make a donation here.

Spread the Word:

Sharing information about a worthy cause or organization goes a long way. As a top-rated military charity with nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent going toward our program services, we keep advertising budgets low and rely on our supporters to help raise awareness. You can do this for HFOT by posting about our organization on your social media networks and telling others to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
