National Volunteer Week, celebrated annually during the third week of April, is an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and honor those who lend their time and effort to strengthen their communities.
Observed this year from April 19–25, the week-long initiative inspires Americans to seek out volunteer opportunities and make service a meaningful part of their lives. This year carries special significance as our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding and marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, a day that forever changed our nation and highlighted the resilience, unity, and service of the American people.
Homes For Our Troops hosts three events designed to engage and educate the community. These events are a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of service that defines our nation, especially in honoring our severely injured post-9/11 Veterans.
We encourage you to make a difference in your community and show your support by volunteering at an event. These events are easy to attend and require just a few hours of your weekend. Bring your family, friends, and kids—all ages are welcome—and be part of a legacy of service that continues to shape America’s future.
COMMUNITY KICKOFF
The Community Kickoff (CKO) launches the start of the home-building process and welcomes the Veteran and his/her family to the community. The CKO is typically hosted at a local venue, such as a community center. Volunteer to assist in registering attendees, and setting up and breaking down event items such as chairs, tables, tents, and decorations.
VOLUNTEER DAY
The Volunteer Day (VD) ensures the landscaping looks as beautiful as the home. The VD marks a pivotal time in the home completion process and is located at the home build site. Volunteer to assist in laying sod for the lawn, mulching beds, preparing and planting shrubs, and registering attendees.
KEY CEREMONY
The Key Ceremony (KC) celebrates when the specially adapted custom home is officially move-in ready. Homes For Our Troops presents the Veteran and his/her family with the keys to the home. Tour the home to see the 40+ major special adaptations providing full accessibility for the Veteran. Volunteer to assist in registering attendees, setting up and breaking down event items, or picking up supplies. Volunteers can also offer their talents to sing the national anthem or to photograph events.
We would love to see you at a build event. Find out if there is one near you by viewing our Event Calendar.
Want to increase your volunteer impact? Ask your employer to sponsor the purchases of water or other necessities for the event. Every little bit helps! Additionally, many corporations match employee donations (or the tax-deductible component of your membership) to our organization. If you volunteer with us, your employer may also provide HFOT with a grant as a way to recognize your ongoing support. Find out if your employer has a volunteer grant program.
