Sgt Hubert Gonzales

Spring Branch, TX

Mission Accomplished on Sept. 21, 2018

A native of the Philippines, Hubert Gonzales was inspired by the values he saw in the United States, motivating him to serve in the U.S. military. He joined the Marines shortly after graduating high school.

On March 31, 2011, Sergeant Gonzales was serving as an Infantry squad leader with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, in Sangin, Afghanistan, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in severe damage to his left leg. After numerous surgeries and extensive treatment, Hubert opted to have the leg amputated for a better quality of life.

Hubert and his wife, Fiona, are parents to Rosebella, Aurora, and Nikolai. Hubert works for a leading global technology and e-commerce company. In his spare time, he volunteers at a senior living community near his school and with a program that helps children with disabilities participate in sports. Fiona teaches special education at the local elementary school.

A specially adapted HFOT home has eased Hubert’s daily routine, giving him more energy for work and family life. He can now bathe safely and independently with a roll-in shower, and prepare meals easily using pull-down shelves and roll-under sinks.

Hubert chose to build his home in Texas for its strong school districts and quality healthcare facilities.

Hubert extends his deepest thanks to HFOT donors and supporters. “You are changing lives. For every home that is built, a Veteran and his or her family are getting a new lease on life.”
