On August 17, 1894, nonprofit organizations officially became exempt from taxes. Today, August 17, is observed as National Nonprofit Day, a day to celebrate the impact nonprofit organizations have on our communities.
In honor of National Nonprofit Day, we encourage you to take a moment to learn about our mission of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives and the impact we make on our nation’s severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. Since 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent goes directly to building our specially adapted custom homes and the Veterans we serve. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives. Empowered by the freedom a donated specially adapted custom home brings, these Veterans can now focus on their recovery and returning to their life’s work of serving others.
Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) was started in 2004 by a Massachusetts general contractor who offered to build a Massachusetts Army National Guard Soldier a specially adapted custom home. The Soldier, who had been injured in Iraq, agreed to have him build the home on the condition he do the same for other injured Veterans. This September, on our nation’s National Day of Service, we will reach the significant milestone of delivering our 300th home. Regaining their independence within their adapted homes enables these Veterans to achieve amazing things, and hopes and dreams once again become a part of their lives. They are able to continue school, obtain jobs, expand families, launch businesses, compete athletically, and even climb mountains. Their caregivers are under much less stress and able to accomplish life goals as well. You can learn more about the impact of our homes at www.hfotusa.org/impact.
Our goal is to build a home for every Veteran who qualifies for one of our specially adapted homes. Here are some ways to support Homes For Our Troops on National Nonprofit Day:
