Five Ways to Support Injured Veterans on National Nonprofit Day

On August 17, 1894, the United States Congress passed the Tariff Act, effectively allowing nonprofit organizations to become exempt from paying taxes. Every year, on August 17, we observe National Nonprofit Day to celebrate nonprofit organizations and their impact on our communities. In honor of National Nonprofit Day, we encourage you to learn about our mission of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives and the impact we make on our nation’s severely injured post-9/11 Veterans.

Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) was started in 2004 by a Massachusetts general contractor who offered to build a specially adapted custom home for a Massachusetts Army National Guard Soldier. The Soldier, who had been injured in Iraq, agreed to have him build the home on the condition that he do the same for other injured Veterans. Since HFOT’s inception, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent goes directly to building our specially adapted custom homes and the Veterans we serve. On February 4, 2024, we will reach the significant milestone of celebrating 20 years of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives.

Regaining their independence in their adapted homes enables these Veterans to continue school, obtain jobs, expand families, launch businesses, and compete athletically. Caregivers experience a reduced level of stress and are able to accomplish life goals as well. HFOT builds homes where the Veteran chooses to live and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives.

Our goal is to build a specially adapted custom home for every Veteran who qualifies for one.
