SGT Nicholas Firth

York, SC

Inspired to serve and protect his country after 9/11, Nicholas Firth enlisted in the Army, serving as an Infantryman with 2-22 Infantry, 10th Mountain Division.

On June 9, 2006, during his first combat deployment, Sergeant Firth was supporting Battery B, 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment when his truck hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Balad, Iraq. He sustained severe damage to his right leg and a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the blast.

After several years of attempted limb salvage, Nick made the difficult decision to have doctors amputate his right leg below the knee.

Now, Nick enjoys spending time with his wife Anna, and Thor, his service dog. While he has made significant progress in his recovery, Nick continues to face challenges in his current home, which he describes as an “obstacle course”.

Receiving a specially adapted custom home with features such as pull-down shelving and a roll-in shower will enable Nick to perform tasks from the comfort of his wheelchair, simplifying his daily routine. He’s looking forward to the extra time he’ll have to focus on creating music, a passion he describes as a constant source of joy. “This gift will allow me to write, practice, and record my music, which is my dream. There is nowhere I feel more alive than on stage, and a safe space where I can be creative will help me make that dream a reality.”

Nick is choosing to build his home in South Carolina to live close to family.

Nick would like HFOT donors and supporters to know he is humbled by their generosity. “You provide security and peace of mind—two things that get smashed to pieces when you’re injured. There are no words to adequately convey my gratitude.”
