SSG Christopher Byers

Idaho Falls, ID

Mission accomplished on September 27, 2025

Following in his family’s footsteps, Chris Byers enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman, driven by a desire to serve his country.

On July 7, 2012, Army SSG Byers was on his third deployment in Mushan, Afghanistan, with B Co, 1-17 Infantry, 2-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast resulted in the loss of both legs below the knee and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Now medically retired, Chris enjoys spending time with his five children—Cruiz, Grayson, Liam, Brennan, and Rowen. Although he maintains an active lifestyle, his previous home lacked the accessibility features needed to support his daily mobility. As a result, he was often required to wear his prosthetics for extended periods, causing significant discomfort, including scarring and blisters on his limbs.

A specially adapted custom HFOT home marked the beginning of a new chapter for Chris and his family. Designed with a single-level, open floor plan, the home provides a safe and accessible environment that enables him to care for his children independently while also supporting his daily mobility, recovery, and overall quality of life.

Originally from Montana, Chris chose to build his home in Idaho to be close to family and friends.

Chris extends his deepest thanks to HFOT donors and supporters for a second chance at life. “HFOT is a miracle made from the hearts of good people.”
