CPL Brandon Walden

Continuing his family’s legacy of military service, Brandon Walden enlisted in the Army in 2010.

On July 3, 2012, Corporal Walden was serving as an Infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Afghanistan when he was shot multiple times during an insider attack. He sustained a gunshot wound to his chin and three gunshot wounds to his right leg, including a tracer round that exploded inside his body, passing through his intestines and into his left hip, causing severe internal injuries.

He received life-saving treatment aboard the medical evacuation helicopter before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany, for additional treatment. Stateside, he underwent a hip replacement, more than 30 surgeries, and nearly four years of physical therapy at Brooke Army Medical Center.

Brandon enjoys biking, fishing, and spending time with his family. In his current home, Brandon faces challenges with balance and mobility that can make everyday tasks difficult and increase his risk of falling. He has fallen while trying to step over thresholds and can experience additional strain on his hip when reaching high cabinets.

A specially adapted custom HFOT home would provide Brandon with features designed to address these challenges, including roll-under access at countertops, sinks, and cooktops, and pull-down shelving that would reduce the need to reach or bend. Widened doorways and hallways will also make it easier for him to move throughout the home.

The mortgage-free home will also allow Brandon to focus on his future. He hopes to attend school online, become more involved in his community, continue supporting Veterans, and eventually start a nonprofit. “I’ll be able to do these activities again with this generous gift. My world will open up tremendously,” he says.

Originally from California, Brandon is choosing to build his home in Texas to be close to family and friends.

Brandon is deeply grateful to HFOT donors and supporters for helping him and other Veterans build a more secure future. “What you are doing for injured soldiers is changing lives for generations to come,” he says.
