SGT Sal Trujillo

Hillsboro, OR

Inspired to serve his country after the 9/11 attacks, Sal Trujillo joined the Army as an infantryman in 2003.

On June 23, 2006, SGT Trujillo was serving with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division in Iraq, when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained severe burns to 65% of his body, loss of vision in his left eye, loss of hearing in his left ear, surgical amputation of two fingers, fusion of remaining fingers on his left hand, and a herniated disc.

He was medically evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany for stabilization before returning stateside to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he spent more than two years undergoing numerous reconstructive surgeries and burn grafts to his face and arms.

Sal and his wife, Brittnay, are proud parents to Evalyn, Salvador Jr., Lucas, and Mateo. Sal enjoys camping, fishing, and hunting. He also volunteers with Vet Outdoors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping injured Veterans gain access to outdoor activities.

In their current multilevel non-adapted home, Sal faces daily challenges navigating stairs both inside and outside the home, often causing pain due to his back injury. A specially adapted custom HFOT home with a single-level, open floor plan will allow him to easily navigate the entire home. He is also looking forward to the financial freedom of a mortgage-free home. “The gift of an HFOT will change my life and my family’s life and take stress off me financially, allowing me to focus on my future,” he says.

Sal is choosing to remain in his home state of Oregon.

Sal would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for their generosity. “To all the generous HFOT donors, your gift is changing the lives of many families. With your help, many Veterans can achieve goals that they once thought were impossible. I thank you for your support.”
