SPC Jose Gallo
Orlando, FL
Jose Gallo followed his dream of serving in the United States military after he left his home country of Peru to live in America. In 2001, he enlisted in the Army as a cannon crewmember.
On March 15, 2005, Specialist Gallo was serving with the 25th Infantry Division in Mosul, Iraq, when he was struck in the back of the head by a bullet, resulting in paralysis on his left side, bilateral vision loss, seizures, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
He was airlifted to Baghdad before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany, for surgery. Stateside, he endured numerous surgeries and extensive rehabilitation at Walter Reed Medical Center and the Richmond VA Medical Center, where he regained the ability to walk with the assistance of a cane.
Jose and his wife, Jackie, enjoy spending time with their children, Jackeline, Blanca, and Mia. Their current multilevel residence is not wheelchair accessible, and Jose worries about the risk of falling. A specially adapted custom HFOT home with a single-level, open floor plan will help him move from room to room safely. “I need a one-story home so I don’t have to go up and down, and an area where I can walk with my cane and be in my wheelchair without bumping into things,” he says.
Jose is choosing to build his home in Florida because of the climate and proximity to the Orlando Veteran Center.
Jose would like to extend his gratitude to HFOT donors and supporters. “You truly are a blessing to all of us. Without HFOT, a lot of Veterans would have lost hope for a better life for themselves and their families.”
