SGT Matthew “Matt” Commons
Williamsport, IN
Inspired to carry on his family’s multigenerational legacy of military service, Matthew Commons enlisted in the Army in 2009.
On May 23, 2012, Sergeant Commons was serving as an Infantryman with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in severe injuries to his legs.
He was airlifted to Kandahar Airfield for immediate treatment before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he underwent numerous limb salvage surgeries at Walter Reed Medical Center before his right leg was amputated below the knee.
Matt and his wife, Alyssa, have two sons, Broden and Kayce. They enjoy being outdoors and traveling to national parks in the summer. Matt teaches social studies and is currently the Indiana State Representative for District 13.
In their current non-adapted home, the master bedroom and bathroom pose substantial challenges for wheelchair use, often making hopping more practical for mobility. A specially adapted custom HFOT home will provide necessary relief and reduce strain on Matt’s leg. “Receiving a house would be the gift of a lifetime. It would provide peace of mind that if I have issues and have to be in a wheelchair more as I age, I can still be helpful to my wife,” he says.
Originally from Indiana, Matt is choosing to remain in his home state.
Matt would like HFOT donors and supporters to know the impact of their generosity. “Thank you for what you do—your support is a huge commitment and means the world to Veterans.”
