Army SGT Matthew “Matt” Commons

Inspired to carry on his family’s multigenerational legacy of military service, Matthew Commons enlisted in the Army in 2009.

On May 23, 2012, Sergeant Commons was serving as an Infantryman with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in severe injuries to his legs and back.

He was airlifted to Kandahar Airfield for immediate treatment before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he underwent numerous limb salvage surgeries at Walter Reed Medical Center before his right leg was amputated below the knee.

Matt and his wife, Alyssa, have two sons, Broden and Kayce. Matt teaches social studies and is currently the Indiana State Representative for District 13.

Originally from Indiana, Matt is choosing to remain in his home state.
