SPC Billy Chandler

Miami, OK

Billy Chandler joined the Army in 2004 to carry on his grandfather’s legacy of military service.

On March 27, 2008, on his second combat deployment, Specialist Chandler was on a patrol as a fire support specialist with the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division in Abu Ghraib, Iraq, when his vehicle was struck by a command detonated improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained the loss of his left leg below the knee, severe damage to his left thigh, back injuries, and shrapnel damage to his left wrist and hand.

He was airlifted to Baghdad International Airport before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany for additional treatment. Stateside, he underwent numerous surgeries and extensive rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Billy and his wife, Bridget, love cooking and spending time with their six children. In their current non-adapted rental home with narrow hallways and doorways, Billy is unable to rest and recover in his wheelchair. A specially adapted custom HFOT home with a barrier-free environment will give him access to every room. “The open floor plan and wider doorways will allow me to utilize my wheelchair more when my leg hurts, which I can’t do in my current home.”

Originally from Oklahoma, Billy is choosing to remain in his home state.

Billy would like HFOT donors and supporters to know he is grateful for their generosity and support. “Thank you for allowing me to improve my family’s life. It means a lot to know that the sacrifices I, and others, have made are not forgotten.”
