SGT David Camargo
Spring Branch, TX
David Camargo knew from a young age that he wanted to serve his country. In 2001, shortly after graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army.
On May 3, 2007, Sergeant Camargo was serving as an Infantryman with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in the traumatic above-the-knee amputation of his right leg, loss of two fingers, and traumatic brain injury (TBI.)
He was transported to Landstuhl, Germany, before returning stateside to Walter Reed Medical Center for immediate treatment. David was transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he spent a month in the intensive care unit. After multiple surgeries, he began extensive physical rehabilitation at the Center for the Intrepid.
David and his wife, Micaela, who are high school sweethearts, are proud parents to two adult children, David and Kayla, and adoptive parents to David’s younger brothers. They enjoy having family picnics and traveling together. Their current two-story home poses daily challenges due to the lack of an accessible shower, as well as stairs both at the entrance and throughout the interior.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home will provide David with the safety and accessibility he needs to move confidently throughout his living space. With an open floor plan, single-level layout, and barrier-free design, he’ll have greater independence and peace of mind, allowing him to participate more in his interests and hobbies.
Originally from Texas, David is choosing to remain in his home state.
David would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for their donations and support. “Your impact extends far beyond just my life—it touches the lives of countless Veterans who came before me, including some I personally know. Because of your support, we’ve been able to gain independence, freedom, confidence, and a renewed sense of security in our homes.”
