Joel Booth joined the military to be a part of something larger than himself.

On July 21, 2011, while on a morning patrol supporting the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, HN Booth stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He sustained injuries to his right foot.  After several surgeries, doctors made the difficult decision to amputate Joel’s leg.

After medically retiring, Joel worked as a government contractor in Afghanistan in 2015. He shares his love for the outdoors, camping, hiking, and rock climbing with his daughter, Adyline, who was born in 2018. His previous home was wheelchair inaccessible, making it difficult for him to navigate from room to room when not wearing this prosthetic.

In his specially adapted custom home, Joel has access to every room in a barrier-free environment. He’s able to easily cook in the accessible kitchen with a roll-under sink, stovetop, and counters, as well as pull-down shelving. The financial stability of a mortgage-free HFOT home gave Joel the foundation to create a stable future. He owns a consulting company and is currently operating as the logistics and supply chain director.

Originally from Missouri, Joel chose to build his home in Colorado because of his love of the outdoors.
