SPC Adam Morris
Mims, FL
Interested in pursuing a career in the military, Adam Morris joined the Army in 2005 as an infantryman.
On August 27, 2007, SPC Morris was serving with the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division in Iraq when he was struck in the hip by a sniper bullet while standing on top of a Stryker vehicle, causing him to fall into the driver’s hatch. He sustained sudden temporary waist-down paralysis, extensive internal injuries, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
He was medically evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany, before transferring stateside to the Madigan Army Medical Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Seattle. Through extensive rehabilitation, SPC Morris regained the use of his right leg and tried for several years to recover the use of his left leg before undergoing an above-the-knee amputation.
Adam and his wife, Jessica, are proud parents to Trever, Travis, Paige, and Haylee. They are active in their local church and enjoy watching their children participate in sports. A specially adapted custom HFOT home will allow Adam to complete daily tasks safely and easily. “The access to laundry, sink, and stove will help me become more independent and remove some of the burden from my wife and kids. Access outside will make it much easier to play with my kids,” he says.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Adam is choosing to build his home in Florida because of the warm climate and sense of community.
Adam would like to express his gratitude to HFOT donors and supporters. “It is both amazing and humbling to think that there are so many people who care about my quality of life. It is more than a house that you’re giving. It’s stability and safety. But most of all, it’s freedom. The freedom to move. The freedom to accomplish. The freedom to enjoy and the freedom to heal. From the bottom of my heart—thank you.”
