Glen Silva was just 17 when he joined the United States Marine Corps. Enlisting early with his father’s approval, he embraced the brotherhood and leadership the Marines offered, mentoring younger Marines and holding all to high standards. “My father was a Korean War Marine. Growing up, I admired his strength, discipline, and the pride he carried from his service. He was tough on me, but it was out of love—he raised me to be resilient and prepared. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and serve something greater than myself. I wanted to earn the title “Marine” and prove I was worthy of it,” he recalls.
Mission accomplished October 2019
Deployed twice to Iraq, Glen was serving as a Gunnery Sergeant on his third combat deployment in Afghanistan in 2010 with the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in the loss of his left leg. After years of extensive rehabilitation, his primary goal was to maintain his independence. “Everyday tasks became battles. I worried about how I’d move around, cook, shower, or just live without relying on someone else. I didn’t want to feel like a burden to anyone,” he remembers.
In 2019, Glen received a specially adapted custom HFOT home, which he describes as a sanctuary providing emotional and physical relief. “The open floor plan, wide doorways, roll-in shower, and lower counters make a huge difference. It’s designed so I can move freely and safely with my prosthetic or wheelchair. Everything is built with thoughtfulness—this home allows me to focus on healing and living, not struggling,” he says.
Now a professional photographer, Glen founded Silvaback Photography, channeling his creativity into capturing powerful stories. His work in landscapes and portraits serves as both a professional and therapeutic outlet. The financial freedom of a donated home has also allowed him to be an active part of his children’s lives. “I’ve been able to enjoy watching my daughter, Elizabeth, pursue her master’s degree in psychology at Ohio State University—an incredibly proud moment as a father. I’ve also had the opportunity to support my bonus son, Malik, as he started college and followed in my footsteps into photography and videography. Being part of their journeys has been a blessing I wouldn’t trade for anything.”
Future Plans
Glen’s future plans include growing his photography business, completing his degree in visual media, and continuing his outreach to help support fellow Veterans in their transition to civilian life. He remains committed to being a devoted father and leaving a lasting legacy for his children.
