Sergeant Daniel Cowart
Orange, TX
Daniel Cowart joined the Army at eighteen seeking greater opportunities for his future.
On May 13, 2007, Sergeant Cowart was serving as a Team Leader with 1st Platoon, Delta Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in Iraq when he was severely injured by a suicide bomber, resulting in the above-the-knee amputation of his left leg, severe damage to his right leg and back, bilateral hearing loss, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
He was airlifted to Balad for immediate treatment before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he underwent additional surgery at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Daniel is the proud father of twins, August and Alyssa. He enjoys spending time with his children, traveling, and attending live music performances.
In his non-adapted home, daily activities can be challenging because the environment is not designed to meet his mobility needs. Narrow spaces, difficult transitions between rooms, and inaccessible areas make it harder for him to move around independently.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home will greatly improve Daniel’s independence and quality of life by making everyday tasks accessible and manageable. “I want to be able to change air filters, light bulbs, clean, and do other indoor tasks without having to climb ladders or having to hire someone,” he says. The adapted design will provide him with greater freedom, accessibility, and the ability to take part in normal household activities with confidence.
Originally from Texas, Daniel is choosing to remain in his home state.
Daniel would like HFOT donors and supporters to know their support is providing him with independence and freedom. “Not feeling like a prisoner in your own home will be the best feeling,” he says.
