A National Day of Service and Remembrance

Categories: Blog, Home

September 11 is a federally recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance—a time set aside to honor the lives lost during the 9/11 attacks, pay tribute to first responders, and to rekindle the spirit of unity and patriotism that carried our nation forward in the aftermath of tragedy.

At Homes For Our Troops (HFOT), we are deeply committed to keeping this spirit alive. We believe the best way to honor this legacy is by serving those who have served us—our nation’s severely injured post-9/11 Veterans and their families. On this day of service, we invite you to join us in meaningful ways that provide lasting impact. Here are ways to give back to those who served and sacrificed.

Attend a Build Event

HFOT Build Events are powerful community gatherings that celebrate Veterans and the collective spirit it takes to build their specially adapted custom homes. Each milestone in the building process provides a unique way to connect, serve, and show your support. With 67 active projects nationwide, there are countless opportunities to take part in these moving events. Find one near you.

Host a Fundraiser

Fundraising is a powerful way to bring people together while directly supporting HFOT’s mission. Whether it’s a bake sale, charity auction, corporate challenge, or even a virtual event, every dollar raised goes toward Building homes and Rebuilding Lives for our nation’s severely injured Veterans and their families. Our fundraising team will work with you every step of the way, offering resources and creative ideas to ensure your event is a success. Some supporters have hosted golf tournaments, school campaigns, or workplace donation drives, each making a lasting impact. No idea is too small—when communities rally together, remarkable things happen. To begin planning your fundraiser, contact [email protected].

Join a Race

Run with purpose by joining those who lace up their sneakers every year to raise awareness and funds for HFOT. You can join our official race team, Team HFOT, or chart your own path as a DIY Runner, dedicating any race, run, or walk—of any distance—to supporting injured Veterans. From marathons to hometown 5Ks, every mile you complete helps ensure Veterans have the freedom and independence of a specially adapted custom home. Check out our upcoming races here and find the right challenge for you.

Become a Monthly Supporter

Consistency is key when it comes to sustaining HFOT’s mission. By joining Operation Lasting Support (OLS) with a commitment as small as $15 per month, you provide a dependable source of income that we can count on year-round. For many of our supporters, joining OLS is one of the most meaningful ways to make a long-term difference. Sign up now!

Make a Donation

Your generosity fuels every home we build. There are several options to make the most of your contribution, such as a one-time gift to provide immediate support, a tribute donation in honor or memory of someone special, or including HFOT in your estate planning, leaving a legacy of service that lasts beyond a lifetime. Each option allows you to tailor your giving to your circumstances while maximizing your impact on Veterans’ lives. Learn About Ways to Donate.

Spread the Word

As one of the nation’s top-rated military charities, with nearly 90 cents of every dollar going directly to program services, HFOT keeps advertising budgets low so that more resources go directly to Veterans. That means we depend on supporters like you to share our story. You can do this for HFOT by posting about our organization on your social media networks and telling others to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

This September 11, honor the past by investing in the future of those who sacrificed for our freedom. Together, we can ensure their service is met with the gratitude and support they so deeply deserve.
