How to Support Injured Veterans on National Nonprofit Day

National Nonprofit Day, observed annually on August 17, recognizes the nonprofit sector’s impact on communities and highlights the importance of charitable organizations nationwide. In honor of National Nonprofit Day, we encourage you to learn about our mission of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives and the lasting impact HFOT homes have on the lives of our nation’s severely injured post-9/11 Veterans and their families.

Since HFOT’s inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent has gone directly to our program services for Veterans. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, blindness, severe burns, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). By providing specially adapted custom homes to our nation’s severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, we restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed as a result of their service.

Regaining their independence enables these Veterans to pursue education, obtain jobs, expand families, launch businesses, and compete athletically. Our latest By the Numbers Impact survey results show that after receiving a home, 92% of Veterans regain a substantial amount of freedom and independence while the number of Veterans obtaining or pursuing a degree or trade certification increased from 19% to 81%. Many HFOT home recipients also reentered the workforce: Veteran employment increased by 110% after moving into an HFOT home, while employment among spouses/caregivers grew by more than 295%.

Our goal is to build a specially adapted custom home for every Veteran who qualifies for our program. Here are some ways to support Homes For Our Troops as we advance our mission of Building Homes and Rebuilding Lives for our nation’s severely injured Veterans:
