National Purple Heart Day is celebrated annually on August 7 to honor U.S. service members who were injured or killed due to enemy action while serving in the military. It is a day of remembrance and recognition for those who have bravely sacrificed for our nation. The Purple Heart is the oldest active military medal in the United States and has been awarded to over 1.8 million men and women, acknowledging their courage and sacrifice.
On August 7, 1782, George Washington established the award, originally known as the Badge of Military Merit. It was designed to commend soldiers for their valor and achievements on the battlefield. The first recipients of this prestigious award were Continental Army soldiers William Brown and Elijah Churchill, who distinguished themselves with acts of unparalleled bravery.
Initially, the Badge of Military Merit was among the first military awards presented to enlisted soldiers and non-commissioned officers. It was reinstated in 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth, as the Purple Heart Medal. Since then, the Purple Heart has continued to be awarded to qualifying service members who demonstrate courage in the face of danger.
Purple Heart Day as a formal observance was established in 2014, providing an official day to honor and recognize those who have been awarded this decoration. The heart-shaped badge is purple because the color traditionally symbolizes courage and bravery.
Across the nation, various ceremonies and events are held to pay tribute to the recipients of the Purple Heart. Local governments, Veteran organizations, and military institutions often host commemorative events, while individuals and communities display flags and wear purple in solidarity.
In honor of Purple Heart Day, Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) recognizes and thanks the military members who have selflessly served and sacrificed for our freedom and security.
Whether through attending a local ceremony, sharing stories of heroism, or simply observing a moment of silence, Purple Heart Day is an opportunity for all citizens to express gratitude and appreciation for those who have served with honor and valor.
