LCpl Mark Seifert
Columbus, MN
Inspired to serve his country after 9/11, Mark Seifert enlisted in the Marine Corps.
On March 7, 2004, Lance Corporal Seifert was serving as an Airfield Rescue Firefighter with Airfield Company, Marine Wing Support Squadron, 374th Marine Air Wing in Baghdad, Iraq, when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast. A firefight with insurgents followed the blast. Mark suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg, shrapnel injuries, partial hearing loss, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
He was evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany, for immediate treatment before returning stateside to Balboa Naval Hospital. In 2010, after multiple limb salvage surgeries, his left leg was amputated below the knee.
Mark and his wife, Kate, share a blended family of six children. Mark enjoys metal working, gunsmithing, and powerlifting.
The cramped layout of Mark’s current house presents significant challenges, particularly bathing and showering in the existing setup and moving freely in the home in his wheelchair. In a specially adapted custom HFOT home, grab bars and permanent seating in the shower would provide much-needed stability and security. Wider doorways and hallways would enable him to safely and independently move throughout the home.
Originally from Minnesota, Mark is choosing to remain in his home state.
Mark would like HFOT donors and supporters to know the impact of their generosity. “Thank you for what you do and for remembering Veterans. An adapted home will provide me with peace of mind and pride in being a homeowner. It will give me the freedom to pursue hobbies and interests in a safe environment. It will allow me to spend more time out of my prosthetic at home, so I have more time outside of the house for activities with my family and friends.”
