CPL Jesse Murphree

Spring Hill, TN

Inspired to fight the war on terrorism after the 9/11 attacks, Jesse Murphree enlisted in the Army in 2006.

On December 27, 2007, Corporal Murphree was serving as an Airborne Infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED). He was violently ejected from the vehicle, leading to above-the-knee amputations of his legs, right arm limb salvage, severe internal injuries, tinnitus, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

CPL Murphree spent more than two years at Walter Reed Medical Center undergoing multiple surgeries and rehabilitation.

Jesse enjoys traveling, fishing, shooting, scuba, and skydiving. He is interested in starting a Veteran nonprofit focused on mental health.

Although Jesse has made great strides in becoming more physically active since his injury, he still faces daily challenges in a home that isn’t designed for his needs. A specially adapted, custom HFOT home with an open layout will offer him the safety, accessibility, and comfort he deserves—including single-level living that ensures full access to every room. This new level of independence will give Jesse the stability and confidence he needs to focus on his future and pursue his goals with renewed determination.

Originally from Montana, Jesse is choosing to build in Tennessee.

Jesse would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for their support. “Receiving a home would be incredible for me because it would give me a real place that I could call home and be comfortable in. I have known quite a few HFOT home recipients, and you guys have really made a difference in their lives.”
