Sgt Dustin Johns

Lee’s Summit, MO

Mission Accomplished on July 16, 2016

On November 12, 2011, Marine Sergeant Johns was serving as a technician with the 2nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company in Sangin Valley, Afghanistan, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED), resulting in the traumatic amputation of his legs and two fingers on his right hand.

He was medically evacuated to Camp Leatherneck before transferring to Landstuhl, Germany. Stateside, he underwent additional surgery and rehabilitation at Walter Reed Medical Center.

Dustin is a devoted father to his two children, Piper and William, and works as an electrician. In his previous multilevel home, Dustin had to navigate stairs and tight spaces that were difficult and dangerous with prosthetics—especially after wearing them for many hours.

A specially adapted custom HFOT home with a single-level, open layout mitigates these challenges. “Living in an accessible home means the world to me,” Dustin says. “I enjoy the security and freedom knowing that I can navigate my home without barriers.”

The mortgage-free home has also allowed Dustin to explore new interests and give back to his community. He participates in programs offered by Warriors Ascent, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting combat Veterans and first responders as they work through the injuries and trauma sustained in service. In his spare time, he coaches his children’s football and volleyball teams and enjoys playing golf, hiking, skiing, and scuba diving.
