CAPT CAMERON WEST
Acworth, GA
Mission Accomplished on Dec. 12, 2015
On Oct. 15, 2010, Marine Captain Cameron West was serving with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Afghanistan when he was severely injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast, resulting in the loss of his right leg, damage to his left leg and right hand, and the loss of vision in his right eye.
Following multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation stateside, Captain West proudly greeted his unit on his prosthetic leg upon their return to Camp Pendleton from deployment in April 2011.
In his previous home, Cam encountered multiple accessibility barriers, including steps at the front entrance, narrow doorways, and a shower that was not wheelchair accessible. Additionally, the countertops were positioned too high for use from his wheelchair, making even basic daily activities difficult to perform safely and independently.
A recipient of a specially adapted custom HFOT home in 2015, Cam is the proud father of three children: Ethan, Robert, and Ella. He is currently the president of HFOT’s Veteran Action and Advisory Team (VAAT) and a member of the Board of Directors. Cam is actively involved in his community and his children’s activities. He coaches his sons’ basketball and baseball teams and serves on the Board of Directors for the local baseball park where they play. Dedicated to supporting education, Cam volunteers with his children’s school’s nonprofit organization, which raises funds to provide advanced teacher training not funded by the county. Outside of his volunteer work, he maintains an active lifestyle, regularly hiking, cycling, and lifting weights at home.
Cam is grateful to donors and supporters for giving their time, energy, and resources to Homes For Our Troops. “Without this program, it wouldn’t be an option for us to have a home that is completely accessible. This is not only a structure or a house, it is a home for Veterans and their families to rebuild their lives.”
