SFC Daniel Metzdorf

Honea Path, SC

Mission Accomplished on Saturday, May 31, 2025

Inspired by his family’s military background, Daniel Metzdorf always knew he wanted to join the service. In 1996, after finishing high school, he enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman.

On January 27, 2004, Sergeant First Class Metzdorf, on his second combat tour, was conducting a night patrol with the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq when a roadside bomb detonated, killing three Soldiers and injuring three others, including Daniel. He sustained severe injuries resulting in the loss of his right leg above the knee.

Daniel was airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany, then transported to Walter Reed Medical Center, where he underwent more than 27 surgeries. On Veterans Day in 2004, Daniel re-enlisted to stay with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of the Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, becoming the first above-the-knee amputee to pass the training course.

Before receiving their HFOT home, Daniel and his wife, Kristen, lived full-time in their recreational vehicle. While they enjoyed the lifestyle, it came with significant challenges. The RV’s small shower and entry steps required Daniel to wear his prosthetic throughout the day, limiting his ability to rest and recover comfortably. He also faced daily concerns about falling while navigating the vehicle’s narrow spaces and doorways.

Their specially adapted custom HFOT home has transformed their quality of life. Designed to accommodate Daniel’s mobility needs, the home allows him to move freely throughout the space using crutches or a wheelchair. The financial security of a mortgage-free home has also enabled the couple to pursue their dream of starting a farm and becoming active members of their local homesteading community.

Daniel chose to build his home in South Carolina, a state that he and Kristen fell in love with during their travels together.

Daniel would like to extend his warmest thanks to HFOT donors and supporters. “To the cheerful givers of HFOT, we have seen the lives that have been changed through your generosity. We are honored to receive this gift.”
