Homes For Our Troops kicked off Military Appreciation month by joining the #GivingTuesdayNow movement on May 5, 2020, a global day of giving and unity. This special event (which took place in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec. 1, 2020, #GivingTuesday) was a way to come together to drive a spike of generosity, community engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.
While current events have drastically altered daily life for many Americans, Homes For Our Troops remains committed to providing specially adapted custom homes to severely injured post-9/11 Veterans, with 24 home building projects under active construction. Since 2004, we have built and donated nearly 300 specially adapted custom homes nationwide, enabling our Veterans to regain their independence and rebuild their lives.
Your support has enabled Veterans like Marine Corporal Zach Nelson and his wife Kiley to live the life of their dreams. Regaining his freedom in the home gave Zach the confidence to become a 911 dispatcher and Kiley is able to go to her job as a nurse without worry knowing Zach is safe at home. Special adaptations, such as wider hallways and doorways for wheelchair access, are especially beneficial for Zach when caring for their young son, Camden.
“It is so heartwarming there are Americans who appreciate Veterans like my husband so much they supported the building of our specially adapted home. HFOT’s donors and supporters have changed our lives. They have given us our very own personal haven where Zach can recover, pursue his goals, and raise our son comfortably and safely,” says Kiley.
