Scott Balestra enlisted in the Army in 2012, following the legacy of his father and grandfather, who also served. He was assigned as a mortarman with the 3rd Cavalry Regiment out of Ft. Hood, Texas.
On Aug. 5, 2014, during his first deployment, Army Specialist Balestra was on an operation as a team leader in Afghanistan, when he lost his left leg in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast.
Scott underwent rehab for a year at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio before medically retiring in 2015. He now enjoys woodworking and spending time with his two huskies. Although he has made great progress recovering from his injuries, Scott’s current living arrangement presents many challenges. The hallways in Scott’s home are narrow, limiting his wheelchair mobility and access from room to room. A new specially adapted home from Homes For Our Troops will remove these hazards and help him live more independently.
Scott plans on returning to school and starting a new career, possibly in woodworking. A home adapted to his injuries will allow him to focus on these goals.
Originally from Ohio, Scott is choosing to build his home in Texas.
Scott is appreciative of Homes For Our Troops and its donors, sponsors, and volunteers who will make his specially adapted home a reality. “Having a Homes For Our Troops home will allow me to live comfortably. Thank you very much for your generosity,” he says.
