Learn of Ways to Support our Mission

Army Staff Sergeant Anthony Verra was on his 2nd deployment when he lost both of his legs after stepping on an IED in Arghandab, Afghanistan on September 22, 2010.

Called in to take pictures documenting the situation at a compound that had just been cleared of five IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices), SSG Verra stepped on an unidentified IED; the blast traumatically amputating his legs and hurling him through the air. Airlifted to Kandahar, and then to Bagram, SSG Verra would travel through Landstuhl, Germany before arriving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC four days after the blast that nearly claimed his life.

Nearly sixty surgeries later, SSG Verra continues his recovery in Bethesda, Maryland at the newly renamed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

SSG Verra enjoys spending time with his family. Attending his son’s baseball games with his wife and young daughter and spending time visiting relatives are treasured moments as he completes his treatments and therapies in Maryland. A football fan, Anthony enjoys attending games as well as watching them on television.

SSG Verra would like to continue to work with soldiers and hopes to earn a degree in Business and work with the Army or an organization with a close military affiliation.

When asked what living in a specially adapted home means to him SSG Verra shared the following: “Homes for Our Troops is a great program with sponsors and volunteers who offer their support and help give back the basic daily needs to people who are in situations similar to mine. A specially adapted home from Homes for Our Troops helps me be more independent and allows me to be an active member of my family. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to live my life in a home without barriers.
