New Donor Challenge
September 16, 2013
Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. As a young kid on the baseball field, I never knew how true the words of Babe Ruth would become to me. It wasn’t until I set foot on the battlefield in Afghanistan that I learned what challenge truly is.
My name is Marine Corporal Brandon Rumbaugh and on November 29, 2010, I lost both of my legs following the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED); the incident resulted in 18 months of treatment and therapy. Asking for help does not come easily, especially for those of us who are – or have been – in the military, even in the face of challenging injuries. When we discover that it is nearly impossible to find a suitable home that meets our needs, we adapt and overcome; we camp out in our living rooms to avoid using the stairs, build makeshift ramps to get to our front doors, or simply “learn tricks” for getting around the bathroom when our wheelchairs won’t fit through the door.
No two stories are the same, but the lasting effects of the injuries we sustained have ramifications extending beyond us to our families and friends, but it doesn’t have to be that way – it’s your turn to make a difference. I’m asking you to step up to the plate and support Homes for Our Troops as this organization continues to restore freedom and independence to severely injured veterans like myself, through the gift of a specially adapted home. My home is currently under construction in Uniontown, PA. Once completed, it will provide me with a barrier-free environment and enable me to focus on living my life once again.
One anonymous supporter feels so strongly about this mission, she has pledged to match each new gift made to Homes for Our Troops, dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000, through the end of October. With your help we can hit a home run and raise at least $200,000, meeting this challenge and giving my brothers and sisters in arms a chance to live in a home that will meet their needs. Homes for Our Troops has achieved a Four Star Rating from Charity Navigator, for such factors as low overhead and sound and responsible fiscal management. Because less than 10 percent of your donation is dedicated to administrative costs, you can be assured your funds will be used for the intended purpose. Simply mail your check or donate online.
Thank you for helping me advance this mission.
Corporal, United States Marine Corps
